How do your products represent social groups or issues?

My short film has an overall goal to display what betrayal looks like. The issue at hand was double disloyalty with attempts for personal gain. Everyone in their life, no matter what age, has experienced distrust. This can come from friends, partners, family, and even in relationships intended as a promise to each other.  I knew that my content would evoke an emotional feeling to which an individual could relate to. I demonstrated this through two ways. One way was stealing from a close friend. The second way was manipulating your partner in order to have the item for one’s personal gain.I found this task challenging as I struggled with casting throughout this whole process. Let alone finding the perfect setting that aligned with the script. I had so many cancellations from close peers who agreed, leading me to go back to my roots. My family came together on a flexible schedule just to get this right for me.  They found others who will fit a certain social group, to have a wide spectrum of differences to make my film more interesting. You could easily tell that this friend group I created, as part of the script, is diverse. So to have this come together truly enlightened a light in my heart. Furthermore, my product goes to expand what the audience themselves would do. Would they split the money with the intended partner as part of the plan? Or would they agree with the antagonist to collect the profits for themselves? It all tied down to a moral standpoint. Half and half or 50/50 would be the intended target as this film can be perceived through many different points of views and how other individuals would respond. Therefore, I perfectly executed my social issue as a director.

How do the elements of your production work together to create a sense of ‘Branding’?

The production was so strategic in a way that you could tell it was filmed and edited by me. For example, everything that I filmed had a certain color grading, which was either natural or edited in all had a pattern. The scenes contained a dimmed lighting mimicking the original park setting to follow a lead throughout the entire film. Also,I included  the elements of mystery, such as the different suspenseful sound effects, the subtle movements of main characters, and even certain angles were purposely placed to have that fulfillment  of what the audience would have expected to fit the genre. To me, this was the symbolism featured in the film. Later on in the scene, I had my cast, which resulted in being my brother last minute, include an inner voice-over to give that internal tone of the antagonist. But I questioned what was missing. After the first day of production, I decided to give my vulnerable character a sense of character development towards the ending scenes. She needed to leave a mark on the audience to reunite with my brand.

To add on, the scratched out fonts colored a deep red was chosen to give the audience a quick glimpse of what they could expect from this short film. Originally, I had the font bleeding out the letters, but from multiple viewings, I figured that it would be misleading into perceiving that suspicion would murder, which is completely off script. This led me to change the entire title, and having to thoroughly explore different editing softwares to get that perfect touch. It was then that I discovered regular patterned out fonts are best to follow up on my brand. All together, the elements followed proficiently.

• How do your products engage with the audience?

As a director I wanted audience participation. To do this,  I implemented multiple scenes of my cast members making direct eye contact and using suspenseful methods. This ranged from sound effects, music, and even hand picked editing to familiarize the audience with my product. Even the setting seemed quite odd to viewers during the premiere as they described perfectly the task of the genre being mystery.  It is just the emotional appeal that interested my audience to pay attention to every detail of my film. The prop that all characters searched for was a simple laptop with digital money. However, the laptop was the symbol of the film. It is what separates the pair from a once collaborative idea of doing together, to rapidly jumping to a solo action. Considering that many have related to this exact social issue at hand, my product reached a certain memory in their minds that caused them to react to every movement by the antagonist.

I went as far as including a small cliffhanger at the end. To clarify, there was a beginning, middle and end. I just wanted the audience to ask for more, which they did at the premiere. It had my viewers debating on what they would do in the antagonist and the vulnerable character shoes. The idea of the pair working together lingered to some but this is what I had planned out. The real problem was the theft overall. That spiked my social media interactions to the max, as I had fifty people questioning the overall ethics of the left out person in the theft plan. Some had sympathy, the majority argued that he was just as guilty.

So far after a week of promotion, I received six hundred viewings and engagement with the audience commenting for next films under my product. It can be agreed that this is great audience engagement.

How did your research inform your products and the way they use or

challenge conventions?

During my completed research, I found that most audiences prefer to have an antagonist lead in mystery genres. This is what led to the changing of my script and a new directional lead. It appears at first that there were two antagonists but  they would take away from my genre making it appear more of a collaboration plan. This is why I had my main character take more of a selfish approach to think of himself in the plan. I discovered that the setting, background effects, and props alone is what would build my short film to fit my genre. I ran into the challenge of what I expected to be included as a convention. The team conversations were all a waste, as I had to think on the spot of what to alternate to make the film work. Three months of planning quickly shortened as time was ticking to get the plan into motion.

From multiple sources and other directional leads, I had the understanding that audiences prefer shocks and twists. This was hard to meet as my casts had trouble presenting an assertive tone that would not make it easy to guess future scenes. My findings further concluded that the heist would be expected to have loud alarms and extreme action to display the main character leaving the scene. With the resources I was provided, I deviated from that perceived expectation and went further beyond that convention. Instead, I had the alarm low and made the heist as broad in daylight. There, the vulnerable character’s judgement is immediately displayed, making the audience more aware of the whole motive from the main character comprehensively.

We have come to an official end.

Well Emeralds, it is time. Today is the last day of production and I just want to express my appreciation towards your patience. Let us do a quick summary of that happened and everything I completed.

For starters, I picked a genre and pitch. Doing this hand and hand really helped me visualize my idea into real life. I gathered a team and I made it work.

Secondly, I organized a schedule and script that outlined what will happen on certain days. I needed this to stay on track and plan ahead.

I got lucky with the backup filming days as many dropped out last minute. I had to find a new cast, location, and conduct further research on how to pull this all together.

In the middle, I switched to a professional camera. To me it shows quality footage for the scene advancement.

Honestly towards the middle I got really frustrated. I had to alter my scripts that fit my casts' personality. I needed it to look natural and not forced like the cringy short films. I am not a creative person at heart but I still try.

Towards the end, I started to really pull everything together. It made me realize that I don't need a huge team to do this. I can be my own director and produce my version of media.

In the end, I got everything secured. Cast, location, and camera all worked hand and hand to create what I all the perfect final task. In all, my best production of media that I am confident you all will enjoy.

Well that is all for now! Stay tuned for the post of my final task. Sending my Emeralds all my love. Remember to stay Royal green!

Life from the audience

Hello Emeralds! Now you all know that I would not dare publish an "decent" film.  I made promises to you all that this would be better than AS level's presentation. I want to make my Emeralds, along with my teacher proud. I gathered the completed film from my assigned team member. Then I allowed only one person to watch.

When choosing the person, I had certain standards. The person needed to be a film nerd, watched media often, and can give constructed criticism.

Surprisingly, I chose my cousin. I always analyze films with her and point out all techniques that the directors may have used.

After listening to all the notes, I contacted my team. I need them to understand that all their hard work has been studied by another person other than myself. All I needed to do is tell my team member fix a few editing  techniques then everything will be completed. I feel so relieved. After the process of you all reading my struggles, it is a beauty for everything to turn out perfect. Maybe all those challenges were simply used to lead me to success. Now one of my final tasks left were to make sure those errors got fixed. Finally, the filming and editing is complete. Before I submit, I need to figure out my last step to completion.

Well that is all for now. Remember to stay Royal Green!

Let us edit away

Hello Emeralds! I am pleased to tell you that filming is complete. Now I want to walk you all through the editing process.

To begin, I want to inform you all on the apps I used. After using my dad's camera, along with the cinematic mode on my phone, I had trouble transferring the data. I asked my teammate to do that. To be a good team member, I also edited the video. Please understand that I did the basics. I assigned my team to do the major editing. It is only fair since I had to do all the filming and figure out the plans for myself.

Secondly, I used iMovie, CapCut, and Canva to do my set task. All I had to do was enter in the scenes. Also, input clean transitions that set the flow smoothly.

I will admit, Capcut's update has been severe. This was due to its temporary ban by the Federal government. In response to that, I noticed that they changed the features. This just made me take more time into editing. Luckily, Canva already had templates and suggested which transitions to do first. Other than that, I gave myself a break. I just need my team's assistance more.

Well that is all for now. Remember to stay Royal Green!

Let's try again..

Hello Emeralds! Based on my previous blog, you all can tell my struggles. So far I have my Individual scenes complete. All that is left is the group scenes. Since some of my cast backed out, my cousin saved the day.

For starters, I sent everyone a text to meet at the local park. Of course, I got permission from the park workers to film. I cannot afford any mishaps. Time is crunching.

I get there and took attendance of those who agreed to come. Then I used my dad's camera to film the scenery. This was just to see the point of view of the audience. Everyone had their scripts the night prior and everything was settled.

Finally, the group scenes went well and I had everyone on business. I felt like a manager in the moment. As promised to the parents, I bought food. I served Publix chicken and bread. The group scenes were finally completed and my stress was relived. Next blog is my review from my partner. Then I will do final filming.

Well that is all for now. Remember to stay Royal Green!

A sudden switch

Hello Emeralds! I am assuming you have all read the last blog and seen my struggles. After I let everyone know the new rules, I decided to do things differently. I filmed the lead characters seen first. The scenes where they come up with a separate plan to betray the friend group. Honestly, doing this first was so much easier. I did not have to correct every mistake of casts. I solely maintained my focus on two lead characters. That was a better concept, wish I thought of it earlier.

Already, two of my cast members quit. It was stated that they had other extracurricular activities that had to be done. I respected it. Last minute, I called my cousins to fill in. In the final production blog, I will list the participating cast members names. I do not want to be in it for many reason. The main reason is, I just find it tacky to be the director and be in the film at the same time. My challenges will show through the acting. Like I promised myself, this has to go perfect. Thankfully, I have backup plans for sudden drop outs like this. I believe for the next recording, I won't cast close friends I associate with everyday. It is just too much of a personal barrier.

Well that is all for now. I have plans to finish filming by the end of March. I will continue to update my Emeralds on this length process to perfection. Remember to stay Royal Green!

This picture is from Northern Florida. The team and I are shocked on how much more beauty it contains. Sad to say, but I see my future Media projects there.

Field trip production?

Hello emeralds! Now that the first couple scenes of the main characters are done, I switched focus. In school we had a field trip. The destination was Busch Gardens located in Tampa, FL. I did a quick overview and noticed some of my cast members were in attendance. This works out great for me!

So here was the plan. In the line, I was simply going to record interactions between a small friend group. Keep in mind the main characters are not there. That means I needed short clips of the friend group just speaking casually about their excitement.

I attempted this three times. First ride was cancelled right upon entering. Second ride had a 105 min wait with too much chatter to focus. Third ride was interrupted by the giraffes’ curiosity about my cart.

Although this was not a scheduled film day, it would’ve been nice to have extra scenes. What matters is that I tried and out effort. The final scheduled days is the following week from today. I’m exactly sure that this will all go well.

That is all for now. Remember to stay Royal Green!

All a big misunderstanding

Hello Emeralds! You will not believe what occurred in today's production. One of my cast members broke their Tibia during an afterschool sports activity. I am not sure whether or not I want to include them in the rest of the scenes. I have a feeling it will confuse my audience when they see a scene of my cast perfectly fine, then followed by another scene with crutches. Even with crutches, it is hard for them to have mobility. Their parents stated to me that it will be some days where the cast member simply cannot make it. I have been feeling down all day as I feel like the past three days have been a total lost.

In a state of frustration, I just went to the park alone to think of a new strategy. I consider two options. Option one, continue filming without that cast member. Or replace them a refilm the scene. Honestly, I just cried to let my emotions out. Is this what director's go through? Maybe I will just stick to writing scripts. Tomorrow, I have a plan. I can't afford any more mistakes and I will be more stern. I warned all my cast that everyone is on their last strike and will be cut. Time is crunching and I still need to edit.

Well that is all for now. Remember to stay Royal Green!.

A new approach to production

Hello my Emeralds! One of my cast suggested that I film with both  Apple iPhone and camera. I put my phone on cineamtic mode and had my team take over the camera. Once again, I shot the group scenes over again. I know that I have time to film the antagonist scene later. This was properly managed with my upkeeping schedule.

To meet at the local park, I advised my team to just tell the park ranger my reasoning for using the community space. I was honest and advised them about my project. Surprisingly, they let my team in for free and transportation was handled in my care.

To feed after the first five scenes were done, I paid for everyone to eat Ihop as brunch. I made sure everyone was well and fulfilled my safety contract agreement.

In addition to the food, my worst nightmare came true. It started raining and I paused everything. I went into an area underneath a tent and suggested to film there. This scene is not official but it would be considered during editing. I believe the scenes came out much better with the rain interfering. The setting fit more for the theme, having the rain sense betrayal. The cast was able to focus better and tie into the script more. Truly the rain enhanced my plot and created a sense of urgency for my main character to act on their plan. Well that is all I can tell for now. Remember to stay Royal Green!

Production in progress...

Hello, Emeralds! This blog is based off the next day which is January 19th. There were some factors that affected my cast members scenes. One major factor was the Presidential inauguration. There were many supporters and non- supporters outside that day.

My task was to use my dad's camera to film the scenes that included the friend group. This was in reference to the pitch. I directed my team member to take notes of the angles, Mis-En-Scene, and sound. I purposely states that I want to wait for editing until all scenes are done. I educated my team that it makes no sense to edit individually since it would it not flow smoothly.

Next, I provided food and safety as I promised in the contracts. I spoke to parents and established that this a professional setting and I will deliver quality work. After the break, I made everyone sit down and watch their performance. I used this new idea to get an extra set an eyes from an audiences' view. Individually, I made everyone give me their feedback and suggest improvements. I want this to be a team effort. When everything is finished I believe they will be happy with the result. Most importantly, I am aiming to show the world my quality work I put out.

The next scenes will be filmed Mid February. That is the best date I picked due to reviewing of my casts' schedule. Well that is all for now. Remember to stay Royal Green!

THE OFFICIAL START OF PRODUCTION

Hello Emeralds, I am back to give the update as promised! I know you all are excited, and it would be fun to enlighten you all on the first day of production. I know in previous blogs, I stated that I will start in February, however, I feel it is best to begin early; as I will be equipped with more time to provide quality work.

The first day of production was on January 18th as that was a good weekend for decent weather. I invited all the cast along with five extras to standby. I made sure to provide food and safety fulfillments as these members of my team are my responsibility.

I used a borrowed camera from my uncle but the quality was fair. I then called my father to borrow his camera as it is up to date. I only wanted to get scenes with the whole friend group. I decided this was best to watch their acting, and suggest advice that will improve the film.

Honestly, it was okay. I expressed to my team that I was not upset and that the scenes needed to be redone. I watched it multiple times. I asked what day will they be free and I got a result of January 19th being suitable. Tomorrow I plan on being more firm. I allowed my cast to enjoy their time, which is understandable, however, this is a contracted agreement that needs to be completed. I promised myself that this media work will be better than the last one.

It is best to film the main characters scene separately as followed by the script. The main characters work together daily and there is no conflicted schedules.

Well that is all for now. Remember to stay Royal Green!

Short film research:Conrad

Canard is a short film that blends surrealism and dark comedy, focusing on the absurd and disorienting. In its genre, common camera techniques include close-ups to capture intense emotions, medium shots to establish context, and tracking shots to follow characters through moments of transition. Wide shots are often used to convey isolation or emptiness, creating a sense of disconnect. The sound in surreal films, like Canard, often relies on non-diegetic music and eerie sound effects to heighten tension, with occasional moments of silence to build unease.

Mis-en-scene (CLAMPS) plays a vital role in this genre. Characters are often dressed in simple, unremarkable clothing to reflect their psychological states. Lighting in surreal films is typically harsh or high-contrast, contributing to an uncanny atmosphere, while props may have symbolic or disorienting roles. Settings are usually ordinary but subtly strange, creating a disjointed sense of reality. Makeup and special effects can be used sparingly but effectively to highlight emotional or psychological shifts in characters.

In terms of editing, surreal films frequently use jump cuts, slow motion, and match cuts to disrupt the narrative flow and suggest altered perceptions of time and space.

What I enjoy about the genre is the exploration of the subconscious and the deep psychological themes it often tackles. The surreal atmosphere allows for rich visual symbolism, which encourages a more abstract form of storytelling. Additionally, the genre’s engagement with the absurd can be both thought-provoking and unique. However, the genre’s ambiguity can sometimes feel frustrating, especially when a clear narrative or message is absent. The overwhelming atmosphere in some films can detract from character development, and the avant-garde nature of surreal films may make them inaccessible to broader audiences. Overall, Canard effectively uses surrealism to explore complex psychological and emotional states, but it can also challenge traditional viewing expectations.

Short film research: Drago

Drago is a short film that blends fantasy, adventure, and surrealism, focusing on themes like heroism, myth, and emotional growth. In this genre, common camera techniques include wide shots to showcase expansive landscapes or grand creatures, and close-ups to highlight emotional moments in the protagonist’s journey. Tracking shots follow the action, while low-angle shots are used to emphasize the power of dragons or heroic figures. High-angle shots convey vulnerability, often portraying characters as small within a vast world.

The sound in fantasy films like Drago typically includes epic orchestral music to amplify grandeur and diegetic sounds like dragon roars or sword clashes. Non-diegetic sound effects add a layer of magic, and silence is strategically used to heighten tension. Background ambience, like nature sounds, helps immerse the viewer in the fantastical setting. In terms of mis-en-scene, costumes are designed to reflect characters’ roles, with elaborate, adventure-ready attire. Lighting can range from bright, golden hues to darker, more muted tones, reflecting the emotional landscape of the film.

Props like magical objects and fantastical creatures are essential to the narrative. The setting often features expansive natural landscapes or mystical realms that emphasize the genre's otherworldliness. Makeup and special effects are used to bring fantastical creatures like dragons to life. Editing techniques include cross-cutting to show parallel actions, slow-motion to emphasize dramatic moments, and action cuts during fast-paced sequences. Flashbacks and visions are often used to reveal backstory or foreshadow future events.

What I like about the genre is the rich world-building, epic scope, and the opportunity for deep character development. The use of magical creatures and symbolism adds layers of meaning to the narrative. However, the genre can sometimes feel predictable, with familiar story arcs and tropes. Excessive exposition can slow the pacing, and certain characters may seem stereotypical. Unrealistic stakes in some films can make it harder to emotionally connect with the story. Overall, Drago embodies the genre’s conventions while offering moments of emotional depth and visual spectacle.

Short film research: Proaopagnosia

To fulfill my genre of mystery, I need to conduct research of what that truly looks like. This short film is named "Prosopagnosia" created by Hugo Keijzer. A short summary of this film is about a man who suffers from the condition of prosopagnosia. In more simple terms, he does not have the ability to recognize faces. This is a case where his best friend was murdered and all traces point back to him.

The sound is simply  diegetic with dialogue to evoke a suspenseful feeling.

Common Mis-en-Scene I witnessed were the main characters, the setting of the best friend's house, and the interrogation room. The lighting was low only to create that imagined blurred vision from the main character to mimic his condition.

The editing consisted of the usual shot reverse shot, over the shoulder, eye-line level, and jump cut.

Along my research, I found other example films such as Death on the nile, Rear window, and Psycho.

Now I want to dive into the genre elements that I like about mystery. I will include foreshadowing to give my audience a hint that something will happen. In my case, this will be negative pertaining to my film.

Next, I need an antagonist. Without a protagonist, the audience cannot predict a 'save the day' narrative. Im sure many will find that interesting.

To add on, I need a plot.  Every film has a plot, otherwise there is no storyline and purpose to the film. I hope for reflection after intaking my film.

To continue, I need dialogue to establish the ongoing conversations to give that mystery approach to my viewers.

To end, I need hidden evidence to play at the end of the scene to gave that gasps so that audience stays and rewatches to find the clues missed upon first sight.

Not all is perfect, I did look at the other remaining side. I decided to not include a protagonist, detective, and inference gaps.  In this film, I did not like the detective. I believe it did not add much but yet waste time. The inference gaps are for longer films. Lastly the protagonist is expected, I want my audience to actually feel the emotions intended.

Short film research: Sahar

To fulfill my genre of mystery, I need to conduct research of what that truly looks like. This short film is named "Sahar" that is created by Alexander Farah. I picked up on visuals and notes, so I will analyze the conventions of this short film. To provide a short summary, this short film is about a disappearance of a daughter after being kicked out by her religious family for repeating mistakes.

First I would like to draw attention to the sound. There are a lot of dialogue and diegetic sound placed into the short film as the family is focused on the sister and her recent actions.

The Mis-En-Scene was family simple as it was only four family characters and one detective. The setting was the family house, the outside view, and detective's office. Low lighting as expected for this religious family to pray and the night-like environment.

Lastly,  the editing in this particular film of mystery had the usual shot reverse shot, action match, and eye-line match.

I found other example films such as Death on the nile, Rear window, and Psycho.

To switch ideas, my research led me to find  five elements of my genre of mystery.

I need foreshadowing to give my audience a hint that something will happen. In my case, this will be negative pertaining to my film.

Next, I need an antagonist. With my character going behind both the friend group's back and the partner's back, the viewers can identify their true intentions within the film.

To add on, I need a plot. There needs to be steps to my film that build the story so that my audience truly understands and can reflect after watching my media.

To continue, I need dialogue to establish the ongoing conversations to give that mystery approach to my viewers.

To end, I need hidden evidence to play at the end of the scene to gave that gasps when the audience realizes my pitch.

With all pros, follow along cons and elements that do not appeal to my liking to the film. I selected to opt out of using a protagonist, detective, and inference gaps. Personally, my research and notes on these elements simply goes against the pitch my team decided. I believe it will interfere with the quality of my work and leave the audience bewildered.

Research: How to make a short film

Before I began filming, there is a few things I need to know. Most importantly, how do I even make a short film? With research I can successfully overcome that challenge.  This is not my first time recording a piece of media, but I aim for it to be the best.

First step is casting. I need to find cast members that is willing to act in depths to what I need. Of course, it will not go as far as making them uncomfortable or go against their wishes. A good cast enhances the quality of them film.  I will evaluate their strengths and weakness to best proceed.

Next is the commitment. I need both the cast and I to commit to our work efforts. Other film makers display this with the proud confidence of their work. I believe as a viewer myself, it is evident when the cast is not committed to their part.

Furthermore it is important that I look into sound. Resources advise that I use to right gear depending on my dialogue in the script.

Now to post production, I have to focus on editing. Directors advise to give it a couple days break to see mistakes and cuts that I may have missed before.

Last but not least, I need notes and feedback. Research has convinced me to be open to criticism as it helps upgrade my short film.

Now with this given information, let's take a look on how I can incorporate into my short film. I will find a reliable cast, go over expectations, produce quality sound, and take time with editing. To be more concise, I need to understand that this is my chance to prove that I can be a great director.

Comparing Le Jetee, the short, and 12 Monkeys, the full-length movie

From the short film of Le Jetee, it began with a black and white setting displaying a French man directed by Chris Marker. The character reflects on the one woman and scars from the past as machines creep by and select Parisians of the past to aid the future.

For my film, I envision the black and white effect of the past being used to demonstrate past memories with my teammate. This would show that there was once a period in time where trust was unbreakable and we have experience with each other's company. Just how the audience could not predict the next scene in Le Jetee, I aim to create the same effect with the editing.

Jumping to the 12 monkeys full movie, a shallow yet colorful  setting is present directed by Terry Gilliam. A virus takes over in 1996, to which the underground prisoners are sent on tasks or experiments to find out the cause. James Cole, the main character takes on the experiment.

In my film, I have the goal of adopting that technique of manipulating the plan from the pitch used in previous blogs. The cast member chosen will go onto their own route, differed from the original plan to rob a group to now being left alone as the main character takes the financial gain for themselves.

Le Jetee is a 1962 short film narrated through timed images and limited graphics. The main editing tool used were fade, hard cut, and cross dissolve.
