What about an Action Film?

  Hey Blog!

Today I will be researching my short film introduction. I will begin by looking at separate genre movies and their typical conventions. I will begin by analyzing action movies.

Common Action Camera Angles:

  • Medium Shots

  • Low Angles

  • Long Shots

  • Following Shots

  • Over the Shoulder shots

  • Close-ups

Common Action Mis•En•Scene:

  • Vehicle Props

  • Special effects makeup to simulate injury

  • Fighting of characters

  • Superhero or solider costumes

  • Low key lighting that later transitions to high key

  • Urban settings

  • Guns and knifes as props

  • Bombs, helicopters, and planes as props

Common Action Editing:

  • Action match cuts

  • Shot Reverse Shots

  • Cross cutting

  • Cut aways

  • Jump Cuts

Common Action Sound:

  • Non-Diegetic Sound

  • Diegetic gunfire, explosions, and screaming

Examples

A few examples of this type of movie are:

  • The Sound of Freedom, directed by Alejandro Gómez Monteverde

  • Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan

  • Guardians, directed by Sarik Andreasyan

  • The Batman, directed by Matt Reeves

  • Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, directed by Joaquim Dos SantosJustin K. Thompson, and Kemp Powers

What I enjoyed

I really enjoyed how in most action movies the editing consists of action match cuts. I think it is remarkably interesting how the genre possesses its own editing technique to get the viewers adrenaline pumping.

I dislike the gunfire and explosions, I believe the violence is excessive and disturbing.

Our decision is...

Good morning viewers, based on the group's vote, we chose thriller. The research we collected allowed us to incorporate suspense and excitement to the audience. This conclusion was reached based on the simple fact that our main protagonist of the opening sequence will be harmed out of the audience's view, leading them to wonder what will happens later on in the film. To reiterate, the goal of thriller genre is to bring out emotions from many twists and turns to viewers. Fortunately, all thrillers have dark settings with one dark evil character. In conclusion, picking thriller allows our group to successfully implement our ideas to make a opening sequence that prevents the crowd from foreshadowing what they suspect to happen next.

Our Pitch

 Our Pitch:

Pitch A: A group of friends explore a abandoned building, a surprise is waiting for them.

Pitch B: Two agents are sent to gather information from high school students on a case, but are the students agents too?

Pitch A grabs my attention by the suspense the idea creates. I love the idea that my groupmates wants to include acting in the opening, therefore, it will not just be music throughout the whole film.  It has a concern that teenagers are alone in buildings with no surveillance, which is exactly what I want. It evokes anxiety and different emotions to make the audience want to watch more. With this pitch, the setting alone is the most exciting part.

Pitch B is okay, however it seems a bit bland. Yes, agents are pretending to be friends with these high school students, but what else? The opening will just be lack lustering. The idea is still good to film, however, I just feel it would not live up to my expectations. The setting would just be places any teenagers hang out at. I suspect that the audience knows what will happen, which isn't a good thing in media to my belief.

Our final decision: On the popular vote and more interesting note, I have decided to go with Pitch A: A group of friends explore a abandoned building, a surprise is waiting for them.

Meet the group!

Hello Emeralds, I am back for a new update on this new project.  For this project, I had the option of working by myself or with a team. Since I am open to challenges and collaborating on ideas with groups of people, I chose a team. For my team, I searched for peers who put quality in their work and have effective communication skills. I would like to introduce my amazing team and the task. The task assigned was a opening sequence. I chose to work with peers who aim to produce the best work. From my previous task, I selected classmates who I worked on for my music video. We observed on how well we work together and reunited once again. Like a good group, we discussed our reflections, and highlighted things we wanted to change. My peers are Natathaly and Benjamin. I picked Natathaly for her creative approaches. Benjamin was selected for guidance and latest ideas. The group proceeded to agree and greeted each other. It was decided that we must collectively plan and create an outline for the film to produce quality work. Easily, we outlined our intentions on what we were going to produce. Well, Emeralds, that is all I can tell you for now. Remember to stay royal green! Same team and new creations! Together, we can strengthen our works. Be sure to stay updated and keep up with our progress.

A new beginning!

Hello, Emeralds, today I was assigned to make an opening sequence. Below is a introduction of my personality, to get an idea of my upcoming film.

Hello, my name is Ayannah Alincy. I would describe myself as a caring, gentle, and genuine person. I believe that having these three characteristics will help me succeed in life. Unlike many, I weigh the positive outlook of events first rather than negative. This allows me to better my mood and set the tone for the week. Some of my strengths are time management, the ability to spot critical detail, and most importantly patience. As a human, I have weaknesses too. They are expanding my creativity, being open minded, and challenging myself to accomplish hard tasks. I enjoy the beauty of green. As a toddler, I would observe nature and fall in love with how leafs of trees were green. This led me to buy many things green from the elegance the color gives off. From observing, I can conclude there is nothing I disapprove of more than introducing plastic to the sea and littering on the beach. It is cruel to sea animals who must adapt to the new trash lifestyle humans actively put them through. To add on, I like staying inside and having time to rest. Like some, I like to enjoy my own presence and have peace. Having a peaceful mindset relieves my brain of stress. Speaking of brains, I would like to mention that my overall goal in life is to be a neurosurgeon. On my free time, I study parts and functions of the brain to have a basic understanding before I attend medical school in the future. Being a neurosurgeon allows me to provide answers and care for people about their brains. Well, that is an overall description of me!
